Upon first use the interface may seem a little “cheesy” to some, (especially those of us who are used to using professional Adobe products) but don’t let the cute look fool you. Wix can be a powerful tool. The only thing I could see anyone having an issue with is the steps it takes to connect your Wix site to your domain name. But even that is covered in the help section; it’s just that, if they don’t pay close attention, the average user could get lost.
This is a two way street, but one that is probably worth considering. The quickness and ease wix gives you , in my eyes, is a revolution in web design.
On the good side of the street you are able to create flash based websites that can look wonderful. You can upload images to interactive galleries. Adding extras like contact forms, Google maps, .pdf/file downloads, mp3 and YouTube videos is also fairly simple. One of the most positive things is that it’s web based. Want to add something that’s not on your main computer? Doesn’t matter, log onto Wix and add an update, a rant etc. Whatever you want is possible from any computer with a decent internet connection and Flash installed.
In regards to embedded video, I actually learned some new information while doing research for this review. Until recently Wix would only allow you to “place” your YouTube hosted video on your site. Some may not have a problem with this, but I didn’t like the idea of having a professional site for a project with a YouTube logo on the video. The fix is not 100% perfect yet, but they are getting there. They currently offer a .FLV/MP4 player, the downside is you have to pre convert the video yourself. In the past Wix has listened to users complaints, I’m sure this is a temporary fix for a better media player to come. I feel this is an important issue in regards to the legitimacy of promoting your films.
More downsides would be the lack of HTML coding support, at this time there is no HTML editing available for the interface. BUT! For the past year Wix has been talking about creating/testing an HTML editor to come. Personally I have yet to have a need for it, but for those of you who do, it’s coming.
The current lack of a custom loading message also is a downside, but again Wix has promised to fix this soon.
