Review: LEDZ Brute 3, Pg. 2

Depth of Options
The best thing about the LEDZ Brute 3, aside from the powerful light output, is the accessories. The gel frame itself becomes a major attribute, since it allows you so much room to play, and adjust your light coloring. There is an on-board battery option which will run the light conintuously for an hour, and a 'Quick Pack' battery that will run the light for 8 hours and clips to your belt. This battery will also run the LEDZ MiniPar and the Brute 9.

You can fit the Brute 3 to work on an available gooseneck, which has a baby pin adapter, or you could attach it to a noga arm or hotshoe. Neither of those are available through LEDZ due to patent restrictions. But it definitely works well with any 1/4 20 adapter, giving you many options for how to use it. The Brute 3 also comes with a handle so you can use it as a sun gun, or reporter light in the field.

Performance
As I mentioned earlier, the LEDZ Brute 3 is very powerful. As compared to its nearest competition, the Litepanel MiniPlus (which retails at around $700 without a battery) is only 1/3 as powerful, and falls off much faster. The LEDZ Brute 3 only has 3 LEDs as compared to Litepanels' 75 or so, and still puts out greater power. It's definitely the most powerful light available in this price range, or anything within $400.

The only drawback is LEDZ's inability to handle 3200 color temperature. You can put an orange gel in the gelframe in order to color correct though, which solves that problem. The reason, according to the inventor, is that “tungsten LEDs are not of the same quality as the handpicked LEDs that LEDZ uses for their 5500k temperature lights.” Apparently, if they are going to do a tungsten light, they are going to wait until the color spectrum and the CRI are worthy of their attention.
