When it comes to writing, there are a number of books on the subject. However, there are two books that I immediately consider and recommend to new filmmakers. If you haven't read either one, I would highly recommend them both.
Brian McDonald's amazing book about writing stories and subtext is simple to read and packed with information you can actually use to make your films stand out!

Blake Snyders' book is one that is a definite must-buy for Indie filmmakers, because it shows you the basics of making a solidscreenplay. While some may condemn Blake's teachings as too "structured," it is absolutely imperative to understand this structure so that you can adapt more cutting edge work from a stable and solid foundation!
