Live
Trace
What
was once a task limited to external programs can now be
executed seamlessly within the bounds of Illustrator CS2.
Live Trace is an easy to use tool that will convert bitmapped
images into vectored artwork in a snap. A wide range of
presets enables the user to choose from a variety of desired
effects from black and white, to grayscale, to hi and
low-res color imaging. (Plus, when combined with Adobe
Production Studio Premium, Illustrator CS2's
Live Trace can be batch applied to video through the APSP-exclusive
version of Bridge, to create iTunes-like commercials and
a variety of other nifty effects.)
Performance
Illustrator is the way to go in terms of artistic
freedom. If you want to draw it, chances are there is a
way to do it in Illustrator. This is the best all
around program for the money and will satisfy the demands
of any vector artist. Unlike the competing Corel programs,
I have rarely had to deal with lost work due to a crash
with Illustrator. CS2 seems very stable, and I have
yet to get it to lock up on me (considering it happens to
me 3 and 4 times a day with the competition's package).
This is THE industry standard, and there is really little
left for me to question. On the precision-technical end
of the spectrum, Adobe is fast becoming the mainstay.
Value
Don't have $499 to drop on an illustration program? Find
the money even if you have to beg or borrow. You will not
find a pro illustration package that can do more or has
a wider following than Illustrator. I am routinely required
to work with a competitor's program, and each time am left
wishing it had the stability, flexibility, and capability
of Illustrator CS2. (And if you want an even better
value for getting Illustrator CS2, then check out
our review for Adobe Production
Suite Premium in last month's issue.)
Final
Comments
Illustrator is a powerful tool that any artist should be
happy to own. Sure it has a few setbacks, but that's where
talent takes over. No program can do everything you'd like
it to, but Illustrator CS2 comes pretty darn close.
