Review: Mudbox 2011, Pg. 8

UV view panel allows you to see the state of your UV coordinates of the model.

Value
The kind of work that artists will be doing in Mudbox is highly-detailed and lends itself to special effects features and video game development. As programs go, it is not very expensive when compared to other name brand software. It works well on today's standard computers and offers several tools to successfully complete a high-fidelity model. And for situations where a team is passing assets through a pipeline, Mudbox provides alternate ways to import and export geometry to most popular software with little or no discrepancies in the composition.

Viewport filters are post effects that can be turned on and off in the viewport to modify the render of what your camera sees.

Final Comments
Autodesk Mudbox 2011 is as powerful as it is intuitive. For an artist, this software balances well between the amount of tools available and their complexity. A clean, efficient user interface is so important as artists focus on creating authentic artwork in a fast-paced work environment. A hobbyist whose concentration is on other aspects of filmmaking may not need a program that is so specialized. But a filmmaker whose aspirations are to use higher end 3D assets in their film or artists looking to work full time in 3D will find this program indispensable. So if you are considering breaking into the industry to do high resolution computer graphics, Autodesk Mudbox is fully capable of producing the results that have become a standard in the entertainment sector.
