Final Critique: A New And
Accurate Map of the World
, Pg. 3

Use of Budget
As I’m outspokenly Dutch, when I first watched this film, $9,500 seemed a bit on the high end for a film that looks relatively simple. However, I had to keep in mind the fact that this movie was shot in New York, which alone means that resources would be more expensive. (Not to mention, New York has now unveiled some very Indie-unfriendly laws that force people filming anywhere in the city to have expensive permits or face strictly enforced fines.) Those of us here in Kentucky could’ve probably done it for less, but it sure would’ve lacked all the great character that is present in New York.

And, even though my Dutch heritage tends to want to stick to the cheap side of things, one really must look at the final product. In this case, a really great movie was produced. So, despite the few minor things that need a bit of a touchup, I’d say it was money very well spent

Of course neither
one expects...
...That by the end of the day
they will both be in love.

Lasting Appeal
This is a really great movie. It’s witty, but also dramatic. It’s a romance, but not a chick flick. It’s really the type that one could watch over and over again. In fact, I’ve already shown it to one non-filmmaker friend, who loved it.

Everyone can find a bit of themselves in Aiden and Fiona, as well as in their conversations and the time they spend together.

Overall Comment
As much as a girl dreams of Prince Charming riding up on his white steed and sweeping her off her feet, we know that story only happens for the fortunate few like Grace Kelley or Princess Diana. (And even then the ending is not always a happy one.) As much as we may all swoon over Dougray Scott (or Drew Barrymore, for our male readers), “EverAfter” never happens in real life.

But the great thing about “A New and Accurate Map of the World” is that it’s a realistic love story. Granted, the chances of something like that happening to your average person are still few and far between, but it’s easier to believe that Aiden and Fiona’s meeting actually happened, and that they really did fall in love in the space of a day.

Besides, let’s be honest; the whole white knight image is a tad over-played anyway. I’d much rather meet “the one” exactly as Fiona did.
