Fremont, CA, USA – Monday, July 22, 2024 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Chile based production company Mazal Producciones captured Mega’s new telenovela “Al Sur del Corazón” with six Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K and two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 digital film cameras. With more than 150 episodes, the telenovela required the extensive number of cameras, all shooting in Blackmagic RAW, to capture the dazzling lands of Puerto Octay, Chile.
Broadcast on Chilean television station Mega and its streaming platform MegaGo, “Al Sur del Corazón” tells the story of a family of four women known as “Las Bravas” who work the lands of Puerto Octay in the south of Chile. The four women, a grandmother, daughter and two granddaughters, have promised themselves that no man will ever dominate their lands, and they work a job that has traditionally been done by men. Empowered with their promise, the women navigate their lives and face what is said to be a curse in their town that no woman will ever be happy with a man. Since its premiere in April, “Al Sur del Corazón” has captivated Chilean audiences with its stellar actors, provocative storyline and beautiful scenery.
To capture more than 150 episodes, production company Mazal Producciones (formerly AGTV) turned once again to Blackmagic Design. Arming the crew with six URSA Mini Pro 12Ks, two Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 and six Blackmagic URSA Broadcast cameras, Mazal brought the telenovela to life with a dynamic multicamera production and vibrant visuals as many of the scenes were shot outdoors in the Puerto Octay lands.
“Blackmagic Design was a no brainer when choosing the gear for this project,” said Cesar Norambuena, operations manager at Mazal Producciones. “Our previous telenovela ‘Hijos del Desierto’ was a huge hit in Chile and has stunning visuals, so we wanted to replicate our workflow for this project and take it up a notch with even more cameras. Capturing nature and paying justice to its beauty were crucial for us.”
The cameras were divided into two units each comprised of three URSA Mini Pro 12Ks, one Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 and one URSA Broadcast. “Because we had a powerful gear setup, the crew had the opportunity to capture scenes simultaneously, indoors and outdoors, without feeling rushed and in great detail,” said Norambuena.
He continued, “For example, the outdoor scenes set in open fields at night were captured with remarkable clarity, thanks to the impressive low light performance of the URSA Mini Pro 12Ks. Capturing the silhouettes of the women at night shooting at horse riders was no easy task with all the movement and darkness involved. Nevertheless, the cameras captured every detail to perfection, and the footage turned out to be just as we wanted.”
The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2s’ compact design came in handy for scenes where the crew wanted to get closeup shots of the actors without being intrusive, capturing the emotion and intensity of the moments. The URSA Broadcasts were the perfect addition on set, helping the crew manage alternate shots indoors and keep production running without any delays.
“DaVinci Resolve Studio also played a significant role in ‘Al Sur del Corazón’ and for Mazal,” Norambuena commented. “There are a lot of greenery, blue skies, and even volcanoes in the south of Chile. It was very important for us to show viewers the beautiful landscape and vibrant colors just as we saw them in person. By shooting in Blackmagic RAW, Mazal had the flexibility to handle the footage smoothly in post when color grading and keep those natural colors just as we intended to.”
“We’re super excited with the results we achieved with Blackmagic Design once again,” Norambuena concluded. “To say this was an extravagant production is an understatement. From the extensive gear used to capture the telenovela, to using DaVinci Resolve Studio in post, ‘Al Sur del Corazón’ is just another hit in Mazal’s portfolio and an inspiration for our upcoming projects.”
