Fremont, CA, USA – Monday, August 19, 2024 – Blackmagic Design today announced that TikTok and YouTube filmmaker Beeveekee shoots with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital film camera and finishes with DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, color grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software.
Beeveekee found the platforms of TikTok and YouTube a perfect outlet for her unique style. “My content has always been centered around storytelling,” she said. Her short films combine a mix of genres, from experimental and traditional horror, with sprinkles of science fiction, comedy and mystery, all in a format ranging from 15 seconds to three minutes in length.
“I’ve always been interested in film and cinema, and social media gave me an opportunity to pursue short format filmmaking,” she explained.
Beeveekee started the journey by creating a video for an online trend, and she found she enjoyed the process. In addition to TikTok she joined Instagram and YouTube to share her work. “I wanted to cast a wide net with these platforms. I think it’s all about accessibility, and with cross posting to three separate platforms I can get my content out to as many people as possible who wish to see my videos,” said Beeveekee.
Beeveekee chose Blackmagic Design products from the beginning. “I’ve always used Blackmagic cameras, even before the start of Beeveekee,” she continued. “Before the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro I used the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, and before that I had the original Pocket Cinema Camera that came out in 2013.”
The common factor that drew her to Blackmagic Design products was the color science. “All my content spends a good amount of time in post, especially when I get to grading the footage, which I do in DaVinci Resolve Studio. The control I have over the most minute details is astounding,” Beeveekee explained.
Keeping to a single camera perspective, Beeveekee’s setup is straightforward, but often involves green screen and a consideration of lenses for each project. “I have a few different series ongoing on my channels at the moment, and each requires a different setup,” she explained. “‘Not Your Normal Kids Show’ , which is a horror, ARPG type series set in a childlike world with a dark and twisted undertone, is a very simple green screen studio setup. I use two lights on the green screen, one back light, a key light on the subject, and a fill light if needed. The camera sits a few feet away on a tripod, shooting directly center at the subject. I swap between 35mm, 50mm, 85mm lenses to get the desired frame, and light accordingly.”
Beeveekee continued, “Other series, such as ‘Brittany Vs’, which is more of a parody horror series, and ‘Sunny Feratu,’ which is our mockumentary series, take a more traditional filmmaking approach. Each scene is shot listed and story boarded before the shoot. My filming partner (who is also my husband) takes the role of cinematographer and gaffer. We usually start with setting up a three point lighting scene as reference and stylize further from there. Some shots require split lighting, others rim lighting, and so forth. It really depends on the context of the video itself.”
Beeveekee found the unique features of the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro valuable to her work. “When I switched to the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro it just made production a whole lot easier,” she added. “All my content is currently shot in 1:1.90 aspect ratio (4K DCI) to fit the vertical format of TikTok and Instagram. The 6K Pro has a built in feature that supports portrait mode videography by rotating the camera 90 degrees. It may seem like a small feature, but for content creators it’s a QoL update.
“The 6K Pro is also a light, versatile, easy to use camera that will fit anywhere in my small apartment where we film all of our content. The built in neutral density filters are also such a life saver, as it gives me more control over stylized lighting I use when filming,” she said.
While Beeveekee had been editing in other NLEs, the team has begun transitioning to DaVinci Resolve Studio for their full post production solution. “My newest video ‘Brittany Vs Ghostface’ is actually fully edited in Resolve,” she said. “But Resolve has been a part of our post production workflow for a while now, mainly as the best color grading tool we have at our disposal.”
Beeveekee embraces the Blackmagic Design pipeline, and the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro as a solution that gives her both the look and the features she needs. “It’s all about having a controlled environment and set. Every shot we do is carefully constructed, lit, and composed. With Blackmagic cameras there’s so much room to shape and sculpt each scene. The image quality and the color science help us create new and exciting content. For us, the main advantage is that it makes us feel like filmmakers, and think like ones as well,” she concluded.
