Day One of NAB in sunny Las Vegas was as crowded as can be with everyone looking for that amazing new product to surprise everyone, much like the Blackmagic Design 3k camera shocked everyone last year. This year did not disappoint, nor did Blackmagic…but we will get to them later. I thought it was important to first showcase what is considered to be the number one new product this year.

Movi by Freefly
Probably the most exciting item at NAB this year by all accounts is the Freefly Movi. They basically took the gyro and gimble technology off of a helicopter camera mount, shrunk it, and gave it a handle. This is an amazing rig that works with DLSRs, Scarlets, Epics, most small to medium sized cameras. You will flip when you see the footage. This is easily the most significant innovation in camera support since the steady cam. No more expensive and difficult to master steadicam rigs…it can even take the place of a dolly or a short jib. Super smooth camera movement that you only see in big budget Hollywood films. BUT….yes, there’s a ‘but.’ It’s probably too expensive for most microfilmmakers to buy, at $15,000. But it’s worth a rental! And with a pretty simple learning curve, it beats the steadicam every time. No choosing between low and high mode, no worrying about balance issues…just perfectly smooth shots with about an hour practice. The BEST news is that they will be coming out with a smaller version which will be half the price. Still a rental, unless you want to sell your car.

Rosco Miro Cube
Though more commonly known in the industry for their filters and gels, Rosco released their new compact LED light source the Miro Cube. These lights weigh only 2 lbs. and have a height of 4 inches while busting out with over 3100 lumens. The “WNC” version of the light allows you to dial in any color temperature between 2900 and 6000 degrees, allowing you to use it in any lighting situation beit indoors, outdoors, or having to match existing lighting. There are no external power supplies and the price is a bargain at $875 when you consider just how powerful it is. There is also a color changing version that allows for any dramatic color from red to blue, orange to purple, you name it, it’s in there. That version has the same street price, and the units are shipping as we speak!
