In
an effort to make filmmaking easier to understand, we've
found that making available a dictionary of commonly used
film terms is useful.
As
we did this, we discovered that there were two somewhat
diversified dictionaries: one that covers more equipment
whereas the other covers more of general filmmaking terms.
We bring the equipment-based Griptionary to you this month
and will return to the general dictionary of filmmaking
terms in future issues.
While
many of you may be very familiar with what a C-47 is,
a new filmmaker is more likely to believe that it is a
new Boeing aircraft than a common, wooden clothespin used
to hold gels on barn doors. Even barn doors sound unusual
until you have a frame of reference.
While
we may do things differently at the micro-cinema level
than are currently done in extremely expensive Hollywood
productions, knowing the terminology ensures ease of communication.
