Catching Up With Broken's Alex Ferrari, Pg. 2

JH: Did you foresee it being a training aid when you started, or did that evolve as you were collecting material for it?

AF: We wanted to make a DVD that would help the low budget filmmaker. Robert Rodriguez makes amazing DVDs of his movies but he is using top of the line gear which is out of the reach of most of us. We wanted to make an extensive DVD that would show filmmakers how to make films using tools they actual had access to.

JH: Considering how much of a techno-geek you are, did you hide any cool Easter eggs in the DVD?

AF: Sorry no, but I did think of it.

JH: I gotta ask: What's up with Broken's ending? Is it actually representative of the feature length ending or is it a red-herring to confuse us when we go watch the feature length film?

AF: BROKEN was never intended to be a full short. It was just supposed to be a calling card to get the feature made.

JH: I understand. And I know better than to ask you what the ending will be in the feature, so we'll all just have to bide our time until it comes out.

Now, on your personal website, I noticed that you've got information about another film that you're working on called All for Nothin'. What's that about?

AF: All for Nothin' was a feature project I worked on 5 years ago. It was never made because the funding fell through but it was a great learning experience.

JH: Well, maybe in the future you'll get the funding to make it. I was quite impressed with acting from the clip that I saw on your site.

Speaking of the future, I know you and Jorge are both monster comic book geeks and want to do a comic book movie down the road. Any word on officially being allowed to direct one? Do you know which one you'd most like to do at this point?

AF: I personally would like to bring "Sandman" or "The Watchman" to the big screen and I know Jorge would like to make "Grendal" or re-make "Swamp Thing."

JH: My wife and are big Sandman fans, so you can count on our money at the box office if you get the okay on that! She and I have had extremely detailed discussions over who would be the best casting choices, so be sure and give us a call if you get stumped!

I'd also love to see both The Green Arrow and The Green Lantern made into films, as well. And of course, as a huge Flash fan, I'm waiting with bated breath to see how Blade Trinity's David S. Goyer does on the film adaptation of The Flash.

So what else is on the horizon for you guys at the Enigma Factory?

AF: BROKEN the feature!! I also am producing a 3D animated short called "Mike and Baxter" and I plan to do another short (and yes there will be another DVD with killer special features attached with it for sale) before we make BROKEN. Just to get in some more practice before we make the big boy!

JeremyHankePicture The director of two feature length films and half a dozen short films, Jeremy Hanke founded Microfilmmaker Magazine to help all no-budget filmmakers make better films. His first book on low-budget special effects techniques, GreenScreen Made Easy, (which he co-wrote with Michele Yamazaki) was released by MWP to very favorable reviews. He's curently working on the sci-fi film franchise, World of Depleted through Depleted: Day 419 and the feature film, Depleted.
