For flags, stands, netting, scrims and other accessories, I visited Matthews Studio Equipment company’s booth. Along with providing some of the same tools as PhotoFlex, they had on display large overhead rigs and frames for gels and diffusion materials. These are especially helpful when working in scenarios that make it difficult to control light falling from above the subject. You can find more details about Matthews Studio Equipment’s line and pricing at their website.
Over the course of a week at the NAB show, I saw numerous products related to lighting. Of course, after purchasing the gear, finding an effective way to transport it is very important. So I paid a visit to Kata, manufacturer of equipment bags, to see what might be helpful to our readership. During my visit, I took a look at their new PALMS-3 light kit carrier.
This case is large enough for a four light kit, power supply and light stands. The PALMS-3 measures nearly 4 feet long by 20 inches wide. The design of the unit is such that the two lengthwise compartments, made for light stands, fold inward and overlap each other in the middle and conceal the main lighting compartment when closed. One main compartment for lights and power supply runs the length of the bag in the center and is the primary body of the bag. All three bag sections are anchored by a plate that forms the base of the bag. Gaffers can transport the bag either by using a shoulder strap (not included), the long aluminum bag handle or the Insertrolley rolling system. Velcro dividers are included and can be cut to desired lengths to form individual compartments within the bag. The interior of the bag is lined with a material that enables any compartmental configuration one desires. The dividers can be reconfigured as many times and in as many ways as necessary. This bag is appropriate as an alternative to bulky metal cases that are, many times, difficult to maneuver and require a lot of space to store. And considering its size and weight (16 lbs.) is quite sturdy. Kata also offers a five year warranty on its products, but will extend that to a lifetime warranty upon product registration.
