How to Build Your Own Shock Mount, Take 1, Pg. 4

Step Four:
Attach bands to support the mic.  The mic should be held firmly but not stiffly by whatever kind of band you use.  I think two sets of bands (front and back) are best to stabilize most mics.  I needed a method to pass the rubber bands through the center of the shock mount frame frame.  Using the dremel tool and cutting disks, I cut slots in the frame (be sure you stagger the slots, as one band will be in front of the other).  Be sure your bands are close enough that shorter mics will be held by the front and back.

Step Five:
Pass the ends of the bands through the slots in the frame.  The cable bands I bought had plastic clasps with them, I passed them through the loops created by passing the ends of the bands through the slots.  If you choose to use rubber-bands or elastic, a pencil, bolt, or just about anything thicker than the slots will hold the bands in place.
