Training Review: Serious Effects & Compositing, Pg. 3

Reusability
The reusability of this DVD is both necessary and problematic. Even though it only has ten tutorials, there are so many useful concepts that are brought up that you will definitely be returning to the DVD quite often.

However, the problems come from the aforementioned issue of having it recorded in Flash on a DVD.  The tendency to skip when you have both it and After Effects 7 open, along with the inability to resize the screen and the lack of keyboard controls for the playback made its use and re-use more cumbersome than I would like.

Value vs. Cost
$49 may seem a bit spendy considering you’re only getting ten tutorials, however the quality of what these tutorials can help you do is well worth it if you need to be able to do these sorts of special effects. Additionally, the included footage which incorporates green-screened footage, Airsoft guns, and a variety of other effects related footage is very hard to come by normally.

Overall Comment
The lessons Andrew covers are awesomely helpful and amazingly in-depth, yet the Flash distribution issues and rapid training speed made it a little harder to use than I would have liked. Still, for high end users and those who really want to push the envelope of visual effects, the things covered in Andrew Kramer's training is found nowhere else!  Just remember that this is an advanced training.  Less advanced users should probably look to one of the beginning After Effects training packages from Total Training, even thought they are more expensive.
