Having worked in the camera department as a DP, Camera Operator and as a Camera Assistant (both 1st and 2nd AC and I've also loaded my fair share of film mags) on both film and digital productions, I have learned that a good tripod or "sticks" can be either your best friend or worst enemy on set. The main issue usually comes from the fact that the best supports made are very heavy and the affordable alternatives can usually be blown over with a light gust of wind. I understand that there has to be a middle ground, obviously one does not have to have an Arri gear head and heavy duty Ronford sticks (weighing in at around 60-70lbs WITHOUT the camera) when shooting with a small HDV camera. But, sometimes I wish that level of precision and craftsmanship were the norm. The alternatives that filmmakers have to deal with on a tight budget were for the most part unacceptable.
So, I suppose the challenge I am putting forth is: Can a tripod make me feel secure that it will not collapse when loaded with a complete camera package and perform in a smooth fashion while being lighter and affordable? I guess we will see.
