Review: Illustrator CS5, Pg. 3

CS5 offers the best version of Adobe Illustrator yet. If graphic design is something you're looking to get into, do yourself a favor and dive into this program. Adobe's products are unmatched when it comes to features, stability and professional quality at the click of a mouse (or the stroke of a tablet).

Compare and create with multiple Art Boards.

Value
This product runs at about 600 bucks, or 200 for upgrading. Is it worth it? For graphic designers, I'd have to say yes. This product rocks, Adobe very rarely ever releases something that isn't worth it in my eyes. For PC users there are some other alternatives out there, but as the old saying goes "You get what you pay for." For us Mac people, Adobe Illustrator is pretty much it. This is something I don't mind at all.

I don't know anyone who buys individual programs anymore, bundling is where it's at. For filmmakers, Illustrator comes with Production Premium CS5, so it's a no-brainer, since you'll already likely be upgrading to the CS5 version of the suite with all the new features across the board!

The multiple Art Board option allows for more mix and matching.

If you need a complete suite with printing abilities for your merchandise and more robust web design features, you should also look at the Master Collection and see if that works better for you, as it includes InDesign CS5 and Dreamweaver CS5, as well. You'll save a good deal of money and get a more creative product than you could ever imagine.

Final Comments
Like any expensive product or gear, you have to put the cost into perspective. What are you going to use it for? Will you eventually make money from the work you create with this product/gear? To the graphic designer, this is a must have program (especially if you're a Mac user). While it might not be the most important choice to the low-budget filmmaker (Photoshop will doubtless be used more), the fact that it's part of all the Creative Suites means you'll likely be picking it up and benefiting from its new features! No matter which camp you fall into, Illustrator CS5 is a powerful tool that still rises far above its competition.
