Performance
The performance on the Z7U is very smooth. Despite the minor disappointments I mentioned above (Iris control not being totally manual, the flash reader not being perfectly integrated, and the preset white balance issue), I find this a much easier camera to use as a professional videographer than the Z1U. It looks more professional and gives you the option to get the results you need as a professional filmmaker.

Value
I would look at the value of the Z7U from a couple of perspectives. You evaluate the value of the camera based on the circumstances you are working under.
When comparing this camera to earlier HDV cameras, the features and flexibility of this camera make it worth the extra cost. This is the first reasonably priced camcorder that has the operational feel of cameras 3 or 4 times the price.
We are on the verge of another major technology shift in the pro camcorder market. The Red, Sony, Canon, Nikon and others have cameras on the horizon that will be able to shoot at much higher resolutions that the HDV cameras at a very similar price point. So if you can wait, the value on this camera is a little late for the surprises around the corner.
Final Comments The Sony Z7U is a great camera that is a pleasure to use. It’s the first camcorder in its class that I feel has the feel and features of a truly professional camcorder. The timing of this camera made sense for me to go ahead and buy it since I will more than make up the expense of purchasing a new camera before the next wave of new technology settles down into the market. I really hope that some of the engineering that went into this camera will be used in the next wave of Sony cameras in the next few years. In the mean time, if you’re not sure if it’s right for you to buy Z7U, then make sure to try renting one for your next film shoot. In my opinion, you won’t be disappointed.
