Equipment Review: LitePad HO Line, Pg. 3

Performance
Overall I was very impressed with how powerful these units actually are. The largest unit, which was a 24”x24” model, provides 48 watts of output. To my surprise, it felt much more like 100 watts. Honestly, I expected the light to be much dimmer than it was.

The LitePads also stayed continuously cool to touch. Unlike traditional lights, LitePads provide a more comfortable work environment because the LEDs generate very little heat. That fact also negates the risk of skin burns and fire. After nearly an hour of using three lights in a relatively small and enclosed area, both the talent and I commented on how comfortable the temperature remained. It was also unnecessary to allow time for the lights to cool before repositioning or storing them. These facts add huge points to the performance rating, from my perspective.

Value
When used in conjunction with the accessories line, LitePads are solid performers and more than adequate to address complex lighting scenarios. As I stated in the opening of this review, individual lights range from $89-$825 and accessories, such as the two channel dimmer, can cost up to $299. I think the value in this product can best be determined on an individual user basis. For microfilmmakers who already have basic lighting equipment and are looking to expand their lighting selection, LitePads are a sound investment. The versatility of the units will definitely make many lighting scenarios much more manageable. For those who are making their initial investments in lighting equipment, I recommend LitePads as a secondary purchase. However, if Rosco were to develop their LitePads in a 3200 degree Kelvin color temperature and package their kits with stands and pins, I would be much more likely to endorse this as a primary purchase.

Final Comments
In the end, I found Rosco’s LitePads to be a quality product. They have definitely found their niche in a competitive lighting hardware market. There are many considerations for microfilmmakers when deciding whether or not to personally invest in LitePads or any other product. I hope the analysis above has given you adequate information to make your decision.
