Software Review: Primatte Keyer 4, Pg. 4

New software often has bugs to work out. Especially when a company introduces support for three new platforms in a single release. I don’t think it’s fair to discount product quality on brand new software based on the first user experiences. You have to allow some time for the company to fix the bugs.

At the time of this writing, the Motion interface for Primatte Keyer 4 had a bug that was in the process of being resolved. The issue is that when a layer is moved, and you go in to change the samples (for example, to add some spill suppression), Primatte will sample in the “old” location and not where the layer has been moved to. There is a simple work-around for this problem, which is to make sure your key is set and locked before moving the layer. You can do this by scrubbing along the timeline and making adjustments to the samples until you are satisfied with the key. Then move the layer. It’s more of an annoyance than a deal breaker. You just have to modify your workflow a bit to avoid the problem.

Ease of Use
Incredibly easy to use. The organized interface, straightforward approach, and simple practical documentation make this just about the easiest keying software in its class.

Depth of Options
Best depth of options I’ve seen. Both in terms of controlling the key with difficult footage and managing complex circumstances like transparent objects (glass) and back-lighting, Primatte Keyer 4 runs deep. I’m sure I’ll be discovering new techniques and features for a long time.

Performance
Fast renders. No hangs or program crashes during any of my tests. The ease-of-use features make Primatte Keyer 4 work fast when you need it to, and dive deep when you need it to.

Value
Incredible value. Whether it’s speed, sophistication, ease of use, or quality of results – Primatte Keyer 4 has it hands-down over the other keying software I’ve used.

Final Comments
I think if you look back over the sample images in this article, you’ll have a sense of what Primatte Keyer 4 can do. As or me, Primatte Keyer 4 is my new favorite software.
