Bill Holshevnikoff’s Power of Lighting DVD series offers viewers thorough instruction in a variety of lighting techniques for backgrounds, interviews and faces, as well as simplifying the principles of color correction and the uses of gels. Equipped with over 20 years of lighting experience, Holshevnikoff presents succinct, effective methods for overcoming common obstacles encountered by gaffers. The techniques are useful for on-location lighting, as well as studio settings. This DVD set allows viewers the opportunity to learn from the author’s extensive knowledge, while working at their own speed.
Using this program, viewers will also become very familiar with common terms and equipment used in the lighting industry. Throughout the presentations, Holshevnikoff features the products of many equipment manufacturers such as ARRI, Lowel, Chimera, Kino Flo and GAM. He also educates viewers on the uses and advantages of accessories such as flags, silks, grip stands, gel frames and more. The culmination of this information will enable even the most novice lighting person to create stunning lighting displays and navigate difficult situations.
Understandability
The Power of Lighting DVD sessions are presented in a format that is easily understood. Each lighting scenario includes diagrams and step-by-step instructions, from the beginning of the lighting set up to the end – including adjusting barn doors, attaching gels and positioning flags, silks and other tools. (See the example in the images below). Another advantage to learning via the DVD set is the ability to “pause” the presentation and study the visual aids provided.
Depth of Information
The depth of information presented is considerable. The length of each topical presentation is at least 40 minutes. The longest program is Color Correction and Filtration, which clocks in at a full hour in length. Given the dense nature of the information, I advise that viewers either set aside additional time to review the material multiple times or watch in segments, allowing time in between for reflection.
