Final Critique: 42 Story House, Pg. 3

Use of Budget
I am astounded that Langen was able to make this film for just over $2,600, almost all of which went to purchasing the necessary equipment for the film (camera, filter, tripod, lighting, software, greenscreen, and external hard drive). It makes sense, but at the same time, it is surprising, considering the overall quality of the final product. The interesting thing though, is that if he already owned the equipment, he could've made the movie for just $576! This should be a lesson to us filmmakers that already have the equipment but bemoan the fact that we don't have any good material. We clearly have no room to complain.

Reminiscent of Sesame Street, some
parts feature graphic animation...
...while others utilize the technique
of stop-motion animation.

Lasting Appeal
42 Story House is very rewatchable, because it is so incredibly creative and inventive; also, the wide variety of humor guarantees that almost everyone will find a few of the sketches funny. I have watched it several times now, and shown to a couple of my friends, and it has been a big hit each time.

Overall Comment
Microfilmmakers are always challenging the conventions of filmmaking and breaking new ground in the areas of creativity. 42 Story House is a classic example of this. The fact that Langen limited himself to one location and the materials there speaks to his talent as an innovative filmmaker . The wide variety of humor presented in the various skits will appeal to almost any viewer. The audio quality needs some improvement, but nothing that can't be fixed with a good mic and some extra time.

This film is extremely funny and challengingly creative. I would strongly encourage our readers to check out the film's website and get a copy of this movie, if for no other reason than to be inspired as a filmmaker and come out with some laughs in the process.

A powerhouse in management, Kari Ann Morgan successfully produced a feature length film before coming to work at Microfilmmaker as Assistant Editor. In addition to writing for the magazine, she's been successfully working with various distributors to get microfilmmakers the chance for theatrical distribution.
