Additionally,
there were some echoing issues in the stairwell which might
have been intended for effect, but ended up becoming problematic.
(Unfortunately, shooting in old towers has a tendency to
have issues like this so, other than not shooting dialogue
on old circular staircases, I can't give a great advice
to avoid this that doesn't involve covering every unseen
surface with towels and noise muffling material or using
ADR after the fact.)
Supernatural
films and martial arts films are the two biggest users of
foley sounds and professional special effects. If the director
has a chance to go back through with either a foley artist
or a nice sound effect library and retouch the effects in
this film, the impact of most of the sequences will be improved
a hundred fold. (The director recently let me know that
this film got him noticed and hired to direct a six-figured
film. Guess what type of film it is? A martial arts film.)
Use
of Budget
Considering the number of camera angles, the locations,
the effects, and the overall look of the film, Mr. Moretti
managed to squeeze a fair amount out of the $10,000 that
was put into this film. And the fact that he managed to
do all that and not used a cliché horror storyline is even
more impressive.
Lasting
Appeal
Despite the fact that the director confesses that he originally
created the film because he was sure that there are a group
of film goers that will watch any movie that is named The
Haunted Heart, there is still a lasting enjoyability
in this film that bears rewatching for all of us.
Overall
Comment
While it does have lighting and sound effect issues, the
storyline and style of the film bears watching and owning.
This is definitely an ambitious first film from Nick Morretti
and I look forward to seeing more of his work. Unfortunately,
the martial arts film he was hired to direct for his next
film doesn't fall into our $30,000 review budget cap, so
we'll all just have to go out and check it out for our own
enjoyment!
