Final Critique: Hubris, Pg. 2

I didn’t notice any white balance or lighting issues, except that there seemed to be a bit too much shadow on Jeremy’s and Barry’s faces while they were at Jeremy’s house. Also, the words in the closing credits don’t stay on screen long enough to give the audience a chance to read them. Even though it’s a pretty minor issue, I think credits are more important in microfilms as they tend to comprise mainly family members and friends, and therefore most audiences actually do want to read them. Other than those minor issues, this film really was quite stunning visually.

He then enlists the help of three
other guys...
...Whose job it is to make Barry
look like the best option.

Use of Audio
I didn’t notice any audio issues at all within this movie. The dialogue in the scenes was clear and easy to understand, as were all the voice-over segments. There were a few moments where the dialogue echoed a bit, particularly in Jeremy’s house, but nothing too noticeable. There also wasn’t a whole lot of music, but what was there fit each scene well.

Use of Budget
Initially, $7,000 seemed like a lot of money to spend on a 19-minute film, but one also has to consider that it has a very strong visual look, good editing, and some very impressive camera work. Also, the director told me that the budget was spent mainly on food (always important); rental equipment, location rental, insurance (three things that can really run up a budget); and key crew members (apparently this use of budget really paid off as the film looks very professional). And if I got my facts right it only took four days to shoot. Now that’s impressive!

Lasting Appeal
This is a movie that I would definitely show to a lot of my friends. Not only is it a very funny movie, but it’s also one that almost everyone can sympathize with. All of us, at one time or another, have done something dumb – even downright ridiculous – just to get someone of the opposite sex to notice us. While this film seems a bit far-fetched, the opening title card that says, “Based on a true story,” will also add an element that many people can relate to.

But what the boys don't realize...
...Is that the girls have a trick or two
of their own to play.

Overall Comment
This is a really funny movie, but also has a vein of dark humor to it as well. I’m sure that many people will be able to identify with the crazy antics that we’ve all gone through to get – or keep – a significant other. The actions of these goofy characters, as well as the humorous narration do a lot to add to the comedy in this film. Plus, it’s just plain cool to look at. All in all, quite a remarkable achievement!
