Editor's Note: When Matt over at the OnBlast Blog contacted me about this infographic he created, I was pretty impressed with the work he'd put in and agreed with a lot of his picks and points. (He even had some ideas that I wasn't familiar with, despite running two magazines using wordpress as our CMS.) Since we as filmmakers want our websites to just work, knowing which plugins are a good idea to start with can be a great step forward in making a site that helps you promote your work, without getting bogged down in all the nitpickiness of WordPress! (Now, if only he'd make an infographic on the top plugins for user submitted content, we'd really be in business!) Enjoy this great infographic! (Just remember that, because it's a graphic, you can't actually copy and paste the expert hack codes into your blog, but will need to retype them. Hopefully, he'll make an easy link to download this off the graphic in the future!)-JTH
Origins of MicroFilmmaker Magazine: The Existential Case of the Virtual Kevin Project (Editorial/Article)
For me to ever have created MicroFilmmaker Magazine in 2005, two key elements had to occur in my life. The first was that, in 2003, I make a narrative first film called Commissioned, which revolved around the world of commissioned computer sales, that broke all the cardinal rules of Indie filmmaking and suffered because of it. (The audio ended up being so bad that the film couldn’t be salvaged, even after a year of redubbing, due to the fact that two actors never returned to loop their work.)
The Force Is Strong With This One: First Time Writer/Director, Jamie Buckner, Tells What He Learned From The Masters (Article/Interview)
Jamie Buckner, writer/director of Split, set to be released through Gravitas Ventures on August 2 digitally on iTunes, Amazon, and VUDU, has had the opportunity to work with a film fan’s wet dream of who’s who in Hollywood, from Stephen Spielberg (The BFG, Bridge of Spies) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo) to Cameron Crowe (Roadies, Aloha) and Nora Ephron (Julie & Juila, You've Got Mail). Jamie answers a few questions about lessons learned from these titans of the silver screen and how he applied them to making his first feature.
Nu-Media Breakthrough: Pokemon Go Filmmaking Challenge (Editorial/Contest)
As MicroFilmmaker explores new media and content creation as it happens, we would be remiss to not shine the light on the Pokemon GO phenomenon, which is taking over the world.
The potential for geocaching storytelling that we’ve been talking about for years may begin to be unleashed for other creatives in the wake of this!
And regardless of how long it lasts, hopefully some of our readers are already grabbing footage and developing a documentary about the Pokeman GO phenomenon.
In fact, we’d like to challenge you to create 5 minute short films on how Pokemon GO is effecting members of your local community–wherever you’re from!
To get you started, here’s a 2 1/2 minute BTS short from the folks at Schmoes Know and Collider.com!
Are People So Afraid Of Sex: Can A Funny Movie Cause A Sex Disorder? (User Submitted Article)
Yikes! Is my funny movie a sexual Typhoid Mary? I never wanted to cause a sex disorder with my future film - maybe just jostle people’s sexual rituals a bit. But traumatic reactions are multiplying like chlamydia cultures. Eight people have exhibited a strain of P.T.S.D. (I’m talking Porn Traumatic Suspicion Disorder, not the garden variety P.T.S.D.), when exposed to my movie.
Creating Scares: Chatting with Shudder Labs’ Sam Zimmerman (Interview)
As a huge horror fan, I was pretty intrigued when I saw Shudder pop up on Amazon as an optional subscription service. The catalog of films available for streaming immediately impressed me – it goes leaps and bounds beyond Netflix in terms of actual quality films that a horror fan would want to see.
