Crowdfunding Indie Film is a Creative Snapshot of Our Turbulent Times
Chances are you haven’t heard of The Thornton Brothers, despite their original television show The Revenger in development with The Weinstein Company, several as-yet unproduced feature films under their belt (to include a thriller they wrote for Zac Efron), and their dark, provocative fantasy book series, Reapers—but that’s okay. You’re in good company, along with everyone else who has no idea what’s about to hit them.
Chris and Jay Thornton have been working as in-the-trenches screenwriters in Hollywood for years, and they’ve decided that now is the time to pull out all the stops with their directorial feature film debut, Cactus Jack.
This is an exceedingly timely zeitgeist film that captures the anonymous vitriol of social media and increasingly polarizing politics of this sideshow election cycle. In Cactus Jack a violent, reclusive hatemonger starts a venomous podcast from his elderly mother’s basement and makes enemies far and wide… until one comes to silence him (and yes, in case you’re wondering—Jack is a Trump supporter who believes a win by “The Donald” will usher in the race war to end all race wars). Think the lovechild of Taxi Driver and Oliver Stone’s Talk Radio for the podcast generation.
In the Thorntons’ words, “this is an attempt to make an ultra-contained, thematically supercharged and extremely relevant gonzo micro-budget feature film” (so timely, in fact, that they’ll be building the outcome of the film around the outcome of the election). They have a game lead actor roaring to go and the hand-selected skeleton crew that’ll allow them to achieve stellar production values on a shoestring budget—but they need grassroots help to bring this film to fruition.
